Social/Political Message Analysis Two: Love for a Child- Jason Mraz

There's a picture on my kitchen wall
Looks like Jesus and his friends involved
There's a party getting started in the yard
There's a couple getting steamy in the car parked in the drive
Was I too young to see this with my eyes?

By the pool last night, apparently
The chemicals weren't mixed properly
You hit your head and then forgot your name
And then you woke up at the bottom by the drain
And now your altitude and memory's a shame

What about taking this empty cup and filling it up
With a little bit more of innocence
I haven't had enough, it's probably because when you're young
It's okay to be easily ignored
I like to believe it was all about love for a child

And when the house was left in shambles
Who was there to handle all the broken bits of glass
Was it mom who put my dad out on his ass or the other way around
Well I'm far too old to care about that now

What about taking this empty cup and filling it up
With a little bit more of innocenceI haven't had enough,
it's probably because when you're young
It's okay to be easily ignored
I'd like to believe it was all about love for a child

It's kinda nice to work the floor since the divorce
I've been enjoying both my Christmases and my birthday cakes
And taking drugs and making love at far too young an age
And they never check to see my grades
What a fool I'd be to start complaining now

What about taking this empty cup and filling it up
With a little bit more of innocenceI haven't had enough,
it's probably because when you're young
It's okay to be easily ignored
I'd love to believe it's all about love for a child

I chose this song because it has a very strong social message. The overall message of this song is that when you can not give your child the attention it needs, buying them things doesn't make anything better. This song shows how a typical divorced family operates. This is show through the quote "It's kinda nice to work the floor since the divorce. I've been enjoying both my Christmases and my birthday cakes. And taking drugs and making love at far too young an age and they never check to see my grades. what a fool I'd be to start complaining now" This shows how not only do the presents make the parents feel less guilty for not having time for their child but also how the child feels compelled to accept things the way they are. Also it shows that when your parents are more worried about appeasing their own guilt by letting their children do as they please they do not realize they harm they are really doing. This is something that happens very often in our society.

Social/Political Message Analysis One: Freedom-K'naan

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

Born to a throne, stronger than Rome
But Violent prone, poor people zone
But it’s my home, all I have known
Where I got grown, streets we would roam

But out of the darkness,
I came the farthest
Among the hardest survival

Learn from these streets, it can be bleak
Except no defeat, surrender retreat

So we struggling, fighting to eat and
We wondering when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait, for that fateful day
It’s not far away, so for now we say

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

So many wars, settling scores
Bringing us promises, leaving us poor
I heard them say, love is the way
Love is the answer, that’s what they say,
But look how they treat us, make us believers
We fight their battles, then they deceive us
Try to control us, they couldn’t hold us
Cause we just move forward like
Buffalo Soldiers

But we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering, when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait, for that faithful day
It’s not far away, but for now we say

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And everybody will be singing it(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And you and I will be singing it(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And we all will be singing it(Ohhh Ohh Ohh Ohh)

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, when I get older
I will be stronger, just like a Waving Flag
Just like a Waving Flag, just like a Waving flag
Flag, flag, Just like a Waving Flag.

The song "Wavin' Flag has a political and social message. One line of the song that makes it political is "We fight their battles, then they deceive us, Try to control us, they couldn't hold us, Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers." This shows how their governments control them and make them fight battles they do not believe in but they rise up and overcome these obstacles and think and do for themselves. It is social because it is also about how much some people struggle and how they are "fighting to eat and we wondering when we'll be free,So we patiently wait, for that fateful day" this shows how even though they have to struggle and life is not easy they still have faith and hope which, in our society, is very admirable.

Imagery Analysis One: Spoon- Underdog

Picture yourself in a living room,
your pipe and slippers set out for you,
I know you think that it ain't too far,
But I,

I hear the call of a lifetime ring,
felt the need to get up for it.
oh, cut out the middle man
get free from the middle man.

You got no time for the messenger,
got no regard for the thing that you don't understand.
You got no fear of The Underdog,
that's why you will not survive.

I wanna forget how convention fits,
hmmm, but can I get out from under it?
Well I cut it out of me.

It can't all be wedding cake,
it can't all be boiled away,
I tried but I can't let go of it,
can't let go of it, uh huh.

You shouldn't talk to the water boy,
and there's so much you can learn but you don't want to know,
You will not back up an inch ever,
That's why you will not survive.

The thing that I tell you now,
it may not go over well.
Oh it may not be Photo Op,
in the way that I spell it out.

But you won't hear from the messenger.
Don't want to know 'bout the thing that you don't understand.
You got no fear of The Underdog,
that's why you will not survive.

The song I chose to analyze this song because it is a very good example of not only imagery but it also fits my theme of society. In this song it talks about not fearing what the underdog is capable of and how the underestimate what some people are capable of. this is show through the lyric "You got no fear of the underdog, that's why you will not survive." This shows that the singer believes that by not seeing the underdog as a true competitor you are in turn guaranteeing your own demise. This is also true of general society, because they do not see the little guy as a threat and do not prepare themselves for when they rise up and fight back for their own rights, ie: riots, unions, etc. One example of Imagery is when tin the song it says"Picture yourself in the living room, your pipe and slippers set out for you" this is showing us that the singer wants us to imagine being in a living room with our slippers there and a cozy scene.

The Wedding Singer

The Wedding Singer: China Girl

After watching the move The Wedding Singer starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the song I chose to analyze is David Bowie’s China Girl. David Bowie was an artist and an innovator. He and his style of music defined the 80’s as a generation. This movie was centered on defining the 80’s and this was done mostly through the music played. Like the artist, this song is very well known. It represents the 80’s and its sound is a part of the pop culture of that time.
This song was played during the scene where Glen, Julia, Robbie, and Holly are in a night club on a double date. Where the song is played is important to the mood and is necessary for portraying it correctly. It not only adds to the mood but without it, the scene would not be portrayed as effectively.
The song plays and Julia says how much she loves David Bowie and the song. Robbie agrees. This shows that either Robbie is trying to show her that he likes the same things as her, or that he really does like the song as well or both. Julia and Holly sing along to it and Glen, who is Julia’s fiancĂ©, tells her to stop singing. This not only shows how controlling he is, but also how he does not respect her. It also shows that he cares more about what the other people at the night club think about him then he cares about Julia. The reason that Glen does not like the song is because it is about a woman being in control in a relationship and how he is dependant on her. This is showed when in the song it says “ I’m a mess without my little China Girl.” This is the exact opposite of Glen and Julia’s relationship because Glen tells her what to do and is not dependant on her at all. Julia and Holly sing the lyrics “When I get excited, my little China Girl says oh baby just you shut your mouth.” Glen interjects their laughter and tells Julia to shut her mouth, showing the difference in the two relationships. This whole conversation is a lead up to after Julia leaves the table to go to the bathroom and in the meantime Robbie finds out that Glen has been cheating on Julia and intends to continue to do so even after they are married. This all is so important to the plot line. With the wrong song, not all of the message would have been conveyed. Without the song the viewer would not get the extent of how much of a jerk Glen really is.
Music is something that can make or break a movie. The movie The Wedding Singer is one movie that, without the correct music placement, would not have been as good. Because it was a movie portraying an era in total, music was very important. Also, the 80’s was a decade when music changed forever, and without the most important songs played in the movie, it would have been a less valid portrayal.

Found Poem

Some of us, were hardly ever here.
And in the end,
Everyone ends up alone.

The world keeps testing me.
You do what they tell you to.
If this is what it takes to be
who I am, who I'm not, who I want to be.
I'll walk, I've got to leave.
Our situation is down to the wire.
I hope you can forgive me,
In the end everyone ends up alone.

Repetition of Sounds Analysis Two: John Mayer Daughters

"Daughters"

I know a girl she puts the color inside of my world
She's just like a maze, where all of the walls all continually change
And I've done all I can to stand on the the steps, with my heart in my hands
Now I started to think maybe it's got nothinging to do with me

Fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers, who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too

Oh you see that skin, it's the same she's been standing in
Since the day, she saw him walking away
Now she's left cleaning up the mess he made

So fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers, who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughter too

Oh
Boys you can break find out how much they can take
Boys will be strong, boys soldier on but
Boys would be gone without warmth of a womans good good heart

On behalf of every man looking out for every girl
You are the god and the weight of the world

So fathers be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers be good to your daughters too
So mothers be good to your daughters too
So mothers be good to your daughters too

The song "Daughters" by John Mayer has many examples of Repetition of sounds. (yellow: assonance, Pink: alliteration) This song relates to my theme of society because it is about how parents are responsible for taking care of their children. It says that fathers and mothers have a responsibility to be good their daughters because they grow up to be mothers and take care of the children of the next generation. without people taking care of their children our society would be ruined.

Repetition of Sounds Analysis One: Cranberries- Zombie

"Zombie"
Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?
But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.

In your head,
in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.

In your head, in your head, they are crying...
In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey.
What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying... I

n your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey.
What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...

The song I chose for to analyze for repetition is the song "Zombie" by the Cranberries. There is examples of both alliteration and assonance in this song. (alliteration: pink, Assonance:Light blue) This song relates to my theme of society in alternative music because this song is about a society in turmoil because of war. In the song it says "with there bombs and their guns...they are fighting." this is an example of assonance and it shows that there is fighting in their society and their nation, but when it says "We must be mistake" this shows that the singer is against their society. They oppose society doing such things to innocent people.
